Crockpot Tandoori Chicken

Not sure where I got this recipe, but it's too amazing that I have to share (it's in my crockpot right now, despite me having to walk to the store before breakfast because my plain yogurt had gone bad & I didn't realize it :P hooray planning ahead?)

Crockpot Tandoori Chicken
Serves 6

3 lbs boneless chicken thighs
1 cup plain yogurt
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp coriander
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp cloves
1/4 tsp pepper
1 Tbs cumin
1/4 tsp cardamom
6 cloves garlic
1 lemon, juiced

1 Use a 6-quart slow cooker. In a small mixing bowl, combine ½ cup yogurt with all dry spices. Smear all over the chicken. Put the chicken into the stoneware. Toss whole garlic cloves on top, and squeeze on the lemon juice. Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours, or on high for 4 hours. Serve with basmati rice.
2 After removing the meat from the pot, stir in the remaining ½ cup of yogurt to make a yummy sauce to pour over the meat and rice.

Looks good. I'd suggest toasting the spices in a nonstick skillet before mixing with the yogurt - otherwise you won't get the full flavor. Putting this on the menu for this week!

That sounds fantastic! I'm always afraid of putting anything dairy in the crock, though. The yogurt won't curdle, especially with the lemon juice squeezed on top?

That sounds fantastic. Hungry now! :-D

Couple of questions:

Do the chicken thighs still have skin on or not?

Could this be made with chicken breasts, do you think? If so, would you go boneless/skinless or whole (with bones and skin)?

I use boneless skinless, I've heard that chicken skin gets a weird texture in the crock
& I made it with boneless skinless chicken breasts once & it turned out fine :)

I'm assuming that's ground cloves and not whole?

I made this tonight - delicious, and SO easy! I didn't bother putting in the second bit of yogurt to finish the sauce, but it was yummy anyway. My husband agreed. Thank you for sharing!

This sounds delicious, quick question for you: Do you think I would be able to use drumsticks? if so, would I have to change the time it is being cooked?

If they were skinless, probably, I don't think you'd have to adjust the cooking time (although I fully admit that I don't know)

Is the chicken's juice, the lemon juice and the semi-liquid yogurt sufficient for liquids? I'd be worried about it drying out in the slow cooker, but I guess that hasn't happened to any of these folks or the OP...

Honestly, by the time this is done cooking, I have to thicken the juice on the stovetop to get it the consistency I want.

I made this last night - it was amazing!! But I do think I'd double the sauce amount if I were gonna be out of the house all day. I found it fairly dry by dinner time.
